Ditch Failed Resolutions and Embrace Success with a 'Past Year Review'
I used to make promises to myself every year but then learned this from Tim Ferris. You don't have to wait for next year to do it, you can start right now!
As the new year begins, many people want to make new promises to themselves. But did you know there's a better way? Instead of thinking of new commitments, take a moment to remember what happened last year. Past Year Review is the term used for this. Many people like it because it helps them think about what went well, what didn't, and what they learned. This can help you make better choices and do well in the new year.
Tim Ferris has a unique way of making things better. Here's how you can do it too!
First, get a notepad and make two parts on it. One part is for GOOD things and the other is for BAD things.
Next, go back to the last year on your calendar and look at each week. Think about what made you happy or sad during that week. Write those things in the good or bad parts of your notepad.
When you finish looking at the whole year, take a look at your notepad. Ask yourself, "What 20% of things on each side made me feel the best or the worst?"
Now that you know, plan to do more good things in the new year! Write them on your calendar and invite friends to do them with you. It's important to make a plan and stick to it.
For the bad things, make a NOT-TO-DO LIST and put it somewhere you can see it every morning for the first few weeks of 2023. These people and things make you unhappy, so don't plan to do them anymore.
Doing this gives you more good things to look forward to and fewer bad things to worry about in the new year!
Always remember, taking away the bad things is not enough. It leaves a space. Make sure to plan good things, ASAP, so they don't get pushed away by all the bad and noisy things that might try to take up your time.
Try it, be skeptical, and see if it works for you!
Have a great week!
