🪤 Productivity Trap
We live in a society that values productivity. We are urged to work harder, smarter, and longer hours to meet our objectives, advance in our careers, and discover our ambitions. But, there is a dark side to productivity that goes unrecognised beneath the gleaming veneer.
People refer to this trap as productivity guilt. It's important to figure out why you feel this way and how it can affect how much work you get done.
Personal and external circumstances might create productivity guilt. It's important to figure out why we feel this way and then do something about it. We can also try to make sure we don't expect too much from ourselves.
A couple of handy dandy strategies to overcome the guilt!
The best tactics are the ones that fit into your day. They are not something you force yourself to do, they are just something you do. And in most cases, they’ll be things you want to do.
🫀 Take care of your health
It’s difficult to be productive if you’re not feeling your best. Get enough sleep consistently, eat healthy food and exercise regularly.
Men who consistently sleep 5-6 hours a night will have a level of testosterone 6-10 years their senior.
㊗️ Embrace meaningful productivity
It's pointless to be productive if you're not working on the right thing. We sometimes do what others want us to do while forgetting what we want to do. So it is best to discover something you enjoy that makes you happy and then work hard to improve it.
🪣 Set realistic expectations
It's important to have doable goals, so you don't get too tired out.
If you want to get in shape and do 1000 pushups every day, it might be too hard to keep doing it. Instead, start with something easy, like doing 2 minutes of exercise each day. The goal isn't to finish everything in 2 minutes, but to get into the habit of doing exercise every day.
Doing 1000 pushups is very hard! Even doing 100 pushups is tough. But, doing 10 pushups is more manageable. You can start with something even easier, like tying your shoes. You do that every day anyway! Then, once you get used to it, you can do more.
Remember, it's important to set goals that are not too hard. That way, you can keep doing it without feeling too tired out.
📇 Create a system that works for you
You created a to-do list and at the end of the day, you feel like you don’t have time for everything on your to-do list.
Try these for your problem:
🗓️ Use a calendar.
Schedule your day in a calendar. If it’s on your calendar you’re doing it.I get you “Calendar? What are you a ROBOT? You’re in 2023 and people want more time in their day and your solution is a calendar, seriously bro?
Bare me with this. I never used a calendar before. I thought it only told us the date. Mobiles and smart watches took its job, and the calendar is unemployed.
I started scheduling everything I need to do in my calendar for the day. It made me feel like I had more control over my time. I can focus better on what I'm doing because I know what I need to do next. If something new comes up, I can decide if it's important enough to stop what I'm doing and do the new thing instead.
Take a paper and write everything that is bothering you. Now, prioritize it.
Eisenhower Matrix: Prioritizes tasks into four categories based on urgency and importance to help you figure out what to work on and what to delegate.
Batching: A practice of grouping similar tasks and completing them all at once.
Warren Buffett’s Two-List Strategy creates a to-do and to-avoid list for easier prioritization and avoids the temptation to work on distracting tasks.
😴 Take time off
It's important to have a good balance between work or career and other parts of your life. This means having enough time to rest and recharge. But, if you spend your free time doing things that make you feel stressed, it's not good for you.
Imagine that relaxing is like a muscle that needs exercise. You can get better at it by practising. You can start by doing things you like to do just for fun, and not because you have to.
You can also try to create a place with your friends where you can relax and do things that aren't related to work. This can be a good way to have fun and take a break from being busy.
Have a great week!
